Colter Visits New York City!

Hello First grade friends and families!  Colter and I just returned to our visit to New York City to be on the Fox and Friends show at Fox Studios.  Did you know that Colter got to go to some famous parts of New York City?  He went to the well known 42nd Street, Time Square, and Central Park.  He even got to see the statue of Liberty!  Colter had a great time, and the people there loved him!

Here are some pictures:

Taking the Plunge for Baby Landon

Ms. Bennett, four brave first graders and a fourth grader took a chilly plunge into Fountain Lake on Saturday.  We did this to raise money for baby Landon Shaw, who has brain cancer.  Ms. Bennett wants to say a special thank you to Evie, Nevaeh, Ramsie, Hailey, and Gracie for taking the plunge with her!  To see more about baby Landon, click here:  http://www.maryvilledailyforum.com/news-mozingo-life-profiles/athletes-firefighters-plunge-landon.

Learning About Hospitals!

Our class took a fieldtrip to our local Mayo Clinic hospital today.  We learned about how one gets admitted to the hospital, as well as about the human body.  We visited the lab to see what blood looks like under a microscope.  We also saw a newborn baby.  We got to go inside an ambulance and learn about what EMTs do.  Everyone had a great time and learned a lot.  Thank you to our local hospital for providing this great experience for our first graders!

Evie is the pretend patient.

Taste Test!

Our class has been studying the five senses... seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, and touching. We learned that our brain uses those senses to find out about the world around us. We did a taste test experiment to find out the different taste buds our tongue has. Do you know what the four flavors are that our taste buds can taste?
Find out below during our "taste test"!

First we tried the salty taste.
Here are Evie, Maddee, Reece, and Hayden trying some salt.

Next we tried the sour flavor.  Noah is trying a lemon.
That is VERY sour!

Then we found out what bitter tastes like by trying Baker's Chocolate.
Samantha and Nevaeh thought that tasted very disgusting!

Last we tried sweet.  Maxx, Ramsie, and Devlin think that is the BEST flavor.
So did the rest of the class!!

Snowman Teamwork!

The snow and the weather were perfect for snowman making.  So, we decided to go outside for a speical snowman making time.  We all worked together to make a "classroom" of snowmen.  We built snowman bodies and heads.  We built tall snowmen and short snowmen.  We even built a SUPER tall snowman.  Everyone worked as a team, helping each other and making the various parts.  We had an awesome time building snowmen today!

Nevaeh, Ramsie, and Adrian work together to make a very BIG snowball!

Samantha, Maxx, and Hayden build another BIG snowball!

Leo is strong!

Nicholas works to bring this snowball over to the team.
Hailey is working on her own snowball in the background.

No one could lift this big ball by themselves.
But together they got the job done!  Teamwork!!

Getting the second ball on top the first one was a big job!

Maddee is bringing a ball over to the team.

This big ball took a lot of muscle to move!

Noah and Josiah put snow arms and a face on this snowman.

Justin got worn out, so he built himself a headrest.

This snowman is taller than Mr. Zack!

Everyone worked together!

Our classroom of snowmen is finished!  We had a great time!!

Valentine Party!

Our room parents came and put on an awesome Valentine party.  The kids had a great time making teddy bear cupcakes and teddy bear frames.  Then they got to open up all their Valentines!  It was great fun.  Happy Valentine's Day!

NUMBER SCROLLS!

Our class has finished writing on their number scrolls for math.  Students have been working on writing numbers in order, starting at zero.  The goal was to get to 200, but many students did extra work and went past 200. This group has been amazing!  More than half the class wrote to OVER 1,000, and some even OVER 2,000!!  All of the students’ numbers added up to 27,192.  When we stretched out all of the scrolls, they spanned 1 ½ times the length of our Sibley hallway.  Way to go, Room 210!!

Here are the top winners who wrote to 1,000 or more:

1.    Adrian:  2,230
2.    Hayden: 2,140
3.    Olivia:  2,130
4.    Hailey: 2,130

Colter's Birthday Party!

Colter, Ms. Bennett's dog, came to school for his birthday.  He turned five-years-old.  Colter loved being with the kids.  We read him some cards and he got some gifts.  We also read Colter a book that the class made for him. Colter read some words for the kids.  He read, "sit, down, and paw."  He did a good job.  Then every one had some birthday cake - even Colter, who stole a bite from a piece!

Happy birthday, Colter!

Colter likes his birthday cards the kids made for him.

He listens carefully while Ms. Bennett reads to him.

What a cool birthday cake for Colter!

The kids blow out the candles for Colter.
Why do you think we didn't let Colter do that?

Colter stole a bite from a piece of cake.  Naughty boy!

We read Colter's book to him.
All the kids wrote stories for Colter.
He liked his book a lot!

Put on Your Thinking Caps!

The Stingray reading group is working hard on a book quiz.  They read a book about a Native American girl named Sacajawea, who went with the Lewis and Clark expedition to explore the land.  These kids are thinking hard about their quiz!
